woman up!

They say: too boring, wear less clothes

They say: oh she ain’t wearing no clothes

They say: lower your goals

Men will get scared

You don’t write your own songs, they declared

I feel lost and underrated

Bitch I was born with a pen and a paper

Made art since, never said later

But I see you there, my biggest hater

Got my inspiration from you, and I couldn’t be greater

Art on my albums and tears too

Working hard every day

I don’t care what they say

I’ll shine like the sun

And make myself a name

Concept:

The music industry has always been male dominated due to history and society. They are currently dominating with 80%. It is only within the past 100 years that females have become more prominent in music. Every year we see more female artists and this project was about celebrating them.

But the video is also intended to create awareness that relates to how the music industry perceives women and what kind of roadblocks women meets. The perception of women is often highly sexualised and without talent, which are some of the roadblocks a lot of women face. There’s nothing wrong about celebrating you sexuality. In fact, women should be allowed to do that, without being objectified or viewed as untalented. This project includes a poem and an animated video with symbolism.

thoughts

I had 4 days to make this video. I wrote a poem, recorded my voice, worked on the animation and didn’t get any sleep (worth it). I usually prefer drawing without using templates but because of the tight deadline, I had to use some references and use them as templates for drawing the frames and illustrations. I did it to practice my frame by frame skills, because I really want to become better at drawing and animating in that style. I am very new to frame by frame and I really want to develop my skills in that kind of matter, since I really love that kind of animation style!
